They discussed how the potential within 5G can be unlocked to make the next era of manufacturing a reality. With this event, 5G-ACIA advances the global dialogue on industrial 5G, taking it to China for the first time and to Asia for the second time. It follows on from similar 5G-ACIA events earlier this year in Seoul (Korea) and Chicago (USA).
The features of 5G technology will mean a paradigm shift for manufacturing. Enterprises of all sizes and industries face similar questions. What are the most promising use cases for 5G? How will they impact production processes? Is there a need for special certification procedures? Answers vary, and close collaboration between all stakeholders within the emerging industrial 5G ecosystem is vital. 5G-ACIA offers them a unique platform. It brings together players from operational technology (OT, such as industrial automation specialists, equipment manufacturers and factory operators) and information and communication technology (ICT, such as chip manufacturers, network infrastructure providers and mobile network operators).
Guest speakers from Baosteel, CESI, Foxconn and Haier
5G-ACIA members and guest speakers from Baosteel, CESI, Foxconn and Haier exchanged views on industrial 5G at the Primus Hotel Shanghai Hongqiao. Through the workshop, 5G-ACIA members provided insights into 5G-ACIA’s activities, focusing on the working groups for use cases and requirements; spectrum and operating models; architecture and technology; liaison and dissemination; and validation and tests. Their presentations has been complemented by guest speakers and a panel discussion on smart manufacturing.
Mueller: “5G is set to become the wireless technology of choice for future manufacturing.”
“5G-ACIA is looking forward to bringing together international OT and ICT players at our first international workshop on industrial 5G in China,” states Dr. Andreas Mueller (Bosch), Chairman of 5G-ACIA. “The constantly growing number of international 5G-ACIA members underpins the fact that now is the time to enable the future of manufacturing. Our previous workshops in the US, Asia and Europe reflected the excitement around industrial 5G, and the confidence that 5G is set to become the wireless technology of choice for future manufacturing.”
Upcoming workshops in France and the United Kingdom
5G-ACIA has already hosted two events of this kind this year, in Chicago (USA) in June, and in Seoul (Korea) in March. Both attracted significant interest from the United States and East Asia. The next workshop on industrial 5G will take place in Paris (France) on November 14, 2019. A subsequent event is scheduled to be held in the United Kingdom in January 2020. Agendas and registration forms will be published on www.5g-acia.org.
5G-ACIA has more than doubled in size
Today, 5G-ACIA has 55 members in total. In 2019 alone, 15 new members joined the alliance: Athonet (Italy), Celona (USA), Cisco (USA), Deutsche Messe (Germany), ITRI (Taiwan), Keysight (USA), LS telcom (Germany), Moxa (Taiwan), NTT DOCOMO (Japan), Panasonic (Japan), Salzburg Research (Austria), Sick (Germany), u-blox (Switzerland), Wago (Germany) and ZTE (China). Including these recent additions, 5G-ACIA has more than doubled in size since its establishment in April 2018, when it had 26 founding members.
About 5G-ACIA
The 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA) is the central global forum for shaping industrial 5G standards. 5G-ACIA members jointly prepare for the disruptive change 5G will bring, promote a better understanding of industrial needs, and gain insights into a highly attractive emerging market. 5G-ACIA provides a unique platform for OT and ICT companies, academia, and all relevant stakeholders to influence 5G development and deployment in line with industrial imperatives. They make the results of their work directly available to 3GPP, the main standardization body for developing 5G. 5G-ACIA is a market representation partner of 3GPP and has the formal status of a working party of the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association, ZVEI e.V. www.5g-acia.org
