Today, more than 100 experts from the OT and ICT sectors and the European Commission met at the 5G-ACIA workshop in Paris to evaluate the potentials within 5G for manufacturing.

At the Crowne Plaza Paris-Republique, 5G-ACIA members gave insights into their global efforts to shape the emerging industrial 5G ecosystem. They were complemented by guest speakers from the European Commission (DG Connect) and Airbus. This 5G-ACIA workshop was the first one in Europe in 2020; following Shanghai (China), Chicago (USA), and Seoul (Korea).

“Now is the time to enable the next era of manufacturing“, says Dr. Andreas Mueller (Bosch), Chairman of 5G-ACIA. “We look forward to connecting international OT and ICT players and shape the emerging ecosystem for industrial 5G together.”

This 5G-ACIA workshop was the first one in Europe in 2020 and mainly organized by 5G-ACIA member Orange.

A paradigm shift for manufacturing
The features of 5G technology will mean a paradigm shift for manufacturing, and therefore a close collaboration between all stakeholders is vital. Enterprises of all sizes and industries face similar questions. What are the most promising use cases for 5G? How will they impact production processes? Is there a need for special certification procedures? With its workshops, 5G-ACIA offers a unique platform to give answers and bring players OT and ICT together. These include, amongst others, industrial automation specialists, equipment manufacturers, factory operators, chip manufacturers, network infrastructure providers, and mobile network operators.

Upcoming workshop in Japan
All 5G-ACIA workshops on industrial 5G have attracted significant interest in Europe, the United States, and East Asia. The next one is scheduled for the beginning of 2020 in Tokyo (Japan). Agendas and registration forms will be published on www.5g-acia.org.

5G-ACIA has more than doubled in size
Counting more than 55 members today, 5G-ACIA has more than doubled in size since its establishment in 2018. In 2019 alone, 15 new members joined. These are Athonet (Italy), Celona (USA), Cisco (USA), Deutsche Messe (Germany), ITRI (Taiwan), Keysight (USA), LS telcom (Germany), Moxa (Taiwan), NTT DOCOMO (Japan), Panasonic (Japan), Salzburg Research (Austria), Sick (Germany), u-blox (Switzerland), Wago (Germany) and ZTE (China).

About 5G-ACIA
The 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA) is the central global forum for shaping industrial 5G standards. 5G-ACIA members jointly prepare for the disruptive change 5G will bring, promote a better understanding of industrial needs, and gain insights into a highly attractive emerging market. 5G-ACIA provides a unique global platform for OT and ICT companies, academia, and all relevant stakeholders to influence 5G development and deployment in line with industrial imperatives. They make the results of their work directly available to 3GPP, the main standardization body for developing 5G. 5G-ACIA is a market representation partner of 3GPP and has the formal status of a working party of ZVEI – German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association.
