The Basic Parameters Needed for Set-Up and Integration of UEs in a 5G Network

In this subtopic, the basic parameters required for the simple setup and integration of user equipment in a 5G network are outlined.

5G User Guide Topics

In order to connect a device, i.e., user equipment (UE), to the 5G network, it is essential to correctly configure certain technical parameters. These parameters ensure that the device can authenticate and communicate with the network properly. While the exact parameters may vary depending on the 5G network, the following common parameters should be requested from the supplier to ensure efficient integration:

  • Access Point Name (APN): The Access Point Name (APN) is required for authentication and access to the 5G network. Each network may use a different APN, and devices must be configured with the correct APN to establish a connection. This configuration must be explicitly set on the device.
  • PLMN ID: The Public Land Mobile Network Identifier (PLMN ID) is a combination of two parameters: the Mobile Country Code (MCC) and the Mobile Network Code (MNC). It identifies the network to which the device should connect. Some devices require explicit configuration of this parameter, while others can automatically detect the correct network. It is important to verify in advance whether the UE can connect to non-public 5G networks using the common PLMN ID of 999/99.
  • Authentication Mode: There are different authentication modes that a device can use when connecting to a 5G network, such as PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) or CHAP (Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol). The appropriate authentication mode should be selected based on the network configuration and the required security level.
  • Packet Data Enabled: On many 5G industrial devices, there is an option (checkbox) that must be enabled to allow data transfer over the 5G network. This is similar to enabling packet data on smartphones. It may be necessary to activate this option to ensure secure data traffic.

The setup will depend on how the system is configured. The configuration shown above represents a typical example. Further configuration using additional parameters not listed above may also be required.
