The 5G testbed for Industry 4.0 is an essential tool for companies looking to test their innovative 5G applications and developments. It enables practical testing across various platforms. With its mobile variants, customers can directly test 5G in their applications—whether on the shop floor, in the logistics hall, or at the port. This offers a significant advantage and a unique selling proposition.
The infrastructure of the testbed is large-scale: In the industry hall, equipped with high racks, forklifts, mobile robots, and a three-dimensional crane system along with reference systems, extensive tests and simulations can be conducted over 1,400 square meters. The office building provides multi-floor 5G coverage, allowing the testing of office applications. The outdoor area offers approximately 10,000 square meters for realistic test scenarios. Additionally, there is cross-site network infrastructure in Nuremberg and Erlangen.
Companies, research institutions and universities can use the Industry 4.0 test bed to investigate how 5G can meet various industrial application requirements in real life. The main beneficiaries can be manufacturing companies, positioning system providers, system integrators and telecommunications companies that need easy access to a 5G test infrastructure in order to validate their solutions and ready them for market.
The test bed offers many possibilities for preparing for the industrial use of 5G:
- Testing newly standardized 5G features before rollout
- Conducting comparison tests to determine the most suitable technology for a specific use case
- Testing possibilities and limits of technology
- Gaining experience in the operation of a private campus network
